In general, when people work out, intensity tends to take precedent over form. That means the concept of form before intensity isn’t practiced nearly enough. The result? Both acute and chronic injuries.
What does that mean?
The human body is capable of adapting to perform and thrive under a huge spectrum of stressors. However, in the context of health, fitness, and introducing new exercises, we can avoid many of the struggles by being careful and deliberate. In doing so, our bodies are more prepared to handle the new demands.
Let’s take a look at how we define form and intensity:
- Form is simply ensuring that your body is moving its joints in the proper range of motion and that the musculoskeletal structure can support itself while performing the chosen activity.
- Intensity comes in several forms including speed, force, weight, duration or a combination of the three.
Before worrying about lifting heavier weights, you should examine whether or not you’re able to do the movement in question. That means going through the full range of motion without compensation. Remember, doing this will help prevent injury. For martial arts, for example, you might first practice strikes in the air and then lightly on targets, before finally striking objects with full force.
Your body is capable of stretching and strengthening, but it may take time. In order to do this, you’ll need patience. You should start by taking an honest look at your abilities, and make an honest assessment. Also, contact one of our fitness instructors about your goals. At the end of the day, if you can adhere to form before intensity, you’ll set yourself up for much bigger gains in the long run. You’ll also mitigate the risks of your chosen fitness plan.
